Steadier calls, easier retries and welcome calls in your language

Our first changelog. Here’s what changed for you this week, starting with the things you’ll notice most.

Calls no longer drop when our AI provider briefly disconnects

Bowlboy carefully stitching a phone cord back together

Our AI provider sometimes dropped its connection in the middle of a call. When that happened, your call ended with it, which hurt most on long holds when you’d already waited a while.

Now, if that connection drops, we reconnect within seconds and the call carries on. The phone line stays open, and the AI picks the conversation back up where it was. If it isn’t sure what it just missed, it politely asks the other person to repeat the last bit. Long holds should no longer drop.

If this happened to you: we’ve issued refunds to those affected. Thank you for your patience. If you were affected and haven’t received yours, open that call and choose Request a refund, or send us a note from Feedback in your account menu.

Try again without starting over

Our analytics showed that many calls didn’t make it. Sometimes our system failed, and sometimes the call ended in a hang-up or voicemail. We wanted you to be able to dial again in those cases without planning a new call or paying more credits. So we’ve redesigned many of them to allow retries.

When a call to a business doesn’t get what you asked for, the call page now explains what happened and offers a way forward, all on the same request. You don’t need to explain anything again.

When you can try again

  • They’re closed. We offer to try again when they open. If the restaurant was closed, we’ll suggest a time after it opens.
  • No answer. We try once more on our own, a few minutes later. After two unanswered calls, we let the number rest.
  • Line busy. We redial a few times, leaving longer gaps between tries.
  • Voicemail. Try again later, or pick a time that suits you.
  • Cut off, or the call failed. If the line dropped, the call didn’t go through, or it got stuck in a phone menu, you can try again.
  • Someone hung up. You decide whether to try again. We wait at least an hour first.

How it works

  • No new call charge for the tries. Each request to a business includes up to 4 tries (the first call counts as one), and they share the call time included in your request.
  • See your included call time at a glance. The call page now shows how much call time your request includes, shared across its tries, separately from any extra time you allowed.
  • Pick a time. Choose when the next try happens. We show the time on their clock and yours.
  • We call within sensible hours. We call businesses between 9am and 8pm their time, and within their published opening hours when we know them. If time is running out today, the card tells you how long you have left.
  • Changed your mind? Tap I don’t need this anymore to stop the tries.
A call page for a restaurant that was closed. The heading reads “Cedar Table is closed right now. Try when they open.” Below it: “3 tries left · no new call charge”, a “Try at 3pm” button, “Choose another time”, and “I don’t need this anymore”.The same closed-restaurant call page on a phone, with the “Try at 3pm” button and “Choose another time” link.
When a business is closed, we offer to try when it opens. Example with sample data.
A call page for a restaurant call that was cut off. A box reads “Try again before 8pm Fernwood Bistro time · 44 min left. 11am your time. We call businesses 9am–8pm their time.” A timeline compares their opening hours with our calling hours. Below: “3 tries left · no new call charge” and the buttons “Try again” and “Pick a time”.The same cut-off call on a phone, showing the time left to try today and the Try again button.
A call that was cut off: try again before their calling hours end, or pick a time. Example with sample data.

Retries apply to calls to businesses. Requests made before this update keep the rules they were made with.

Welcome calls in your language and country

Our first welcome calls leaned a little too far into playful performances. One of our hosts even spoke backwards, he did. Fun it was, but confusing too: some people thought that’s how JooVoice would sound on their own calls. The new welcome calls are simpler, more natural, and in your language. Know it, you must: on your own calls, JooVoice simply speaks for you, clearly and politely.

We suggest a language and country based on your verified phone number, so you can hear JooVoice the way it sounds where you live, or in a language you prefer. You can change it before we call, and your choice applies only to the welcome call.

You can choose from 16

  • American English
  • Australian English
  • British English
  • Canadian English
  • Malaysian English
  • New Zealand English
  • Singaporean English
  • Hong Kong Cantonese 香港粵語
  • Canadian French Français canadien
  • French · France Français
  • German Deutsch
  • Hungarian Magyar
  • Japanese 日本語
  • Malaysian Malay Bahasa Melayu
  • Taiwan Mandarin 台灣華語
  • Portuguese · Portugal Português

Missed your welcome call? When you try again, you can pick a different language.

Refreshed voices. We’ve also refreshed the voices on some welcome calls in British, American, Canadian, Singaporean and Malaysian English, French, Cantonese and Japanese.

The “Your welcome call” card for a Canadian phone number. The “In” row says Canadian English with a Change link. The open picker shows “Suggested for you: Canadian English, Canadian French”, then “All languages”.On a phone, a sheet titled “Choose your welcome language” lists Canadian English and Canadian French as suggestions, followed by all languages.
For a Canadian number we suggest Canadian English or Canadian French. Example with a sample account.
  • Thank you

A free credit, on us

Thank you for being here this early. If you’ve bought at least 3 credits, we’re adding 1 free credit to your account as a small thank-you. You don’t need to do anything.

“Sometime today” requests now go ahead

Some requests don’t name an exact hour, like “check if they have a room for check-in today”. Before, a request like that could get all the way to your final go-ahead and then be refused, even after you’d paid to prepare it. Now it goes ahead. We still respect any deadline you gave us, the business’s opening hours and our calling hours.

“That time has already passed”: we’ll tell you right away

Say you type “book a table tonight at 7pm” at 8pm. Before, the request quietly closed as “passed”. Now you get an answer straight away on Home, for example “7pm tonight has already passed — did you mean tomorrow at 7pm?” Your words stay in the box, so you can fix the time and send again. Nothing is charged.

More time to say go

When a call is prepared and waiting for your go-ahead, it now waits until the time your request actually needs (up to a day). Before, it could lapse after an hour. So a call prepared tonight for “9am tomorrow, before my 10:30 appointment” is still ready in the morning.

If you use JooVoice through your own AI agent, your agent can now approve a call for a specific time, up to 7 days ahead.

Better with business numbers

  • Toll-free numbers, like a 1-800 number, are now called directly as a business, even if we can’t find them in a listing.
  • Numbers typed without a country code are now matched to the right business more often.
  • We check a business number you type into your request before anything is charged. If we can’t confirm it, we tell you first so you can decide how to go ahead.
  • Policy update

A privacy policy update

To find and fix what goes wrong on calls (for example, phone menus that trip us up), we now run an automated quality analysis on calls. It’s done by machines only, and no one on our team reads your calls for it. Identifying details are removed before anything is kept, and we keep only patterns and counts, never transcripts or recordings. It isn’t used to train models. Private calls and calls from before the update are never included.

Human review of samples and use for improvement still happen only if you’ve turned on Help improve JooVoice. Your existing choice hasn’t changed.

  • Bug fix

More bug fixes

  • A business call cut off near the end of the day no longer shows “tries left” with no way to use them. The page now says when you can try next and why.
  • A request whose time had passed no longer shows a confusing “Your previous request is unavailable” message.
  • Scheduled-call emails now show the time zone next to the time.

Also fixed, and described above: calls dropping when our AI provider disconnects, “sometime today” requests refused at the go-ahead, prepared calls lapsing after an hour and business numbers not being recognised.

Stability and reliability updates

Plus many stability and reliability improvements behind the scenes, so JooVoice stays quick and dependable as more of you use it.
